Case Study : Air Defence (People, process and System)

On the right is a graphical representation of an example ISTAR air-defence.

An enemy aircraft is attacking a defensive position.

Initially a surveillance capability detects an incoming aircraft.

The business process required to confirm an enemy aggressor is undertaken, which typically would include a human and a machine.

Details of the aggressor are forwarded to a tasking officer who will allocate a defensive capability.

Once tasked and provided with targeting information, a defensive missile system engages the enemy aircraft and eliminates the threat.

Each of the systems has a process that needs to be undertaken – understanding this means:

· The time taken can be derived

· Bottlenecks are discovered and dealt with.

· The requirements for the communications infrastructure are understood.

This approach also allows for a comparative evaluation of system performance—would a new approach help or would it hinder? Would a new approach overwhelm a human in the loop? How much benefit would a new system offer?

Hitting the target : This demonstration shows the major actors, their interaction and the business function they undertake—all in an understandable graphical format.
